Proventil is a bronchodilator that relaxes muscles in the airways and increases airflow to the lungs. Proventil HFA is used to treat or prevent bronchospasm in people with reversible obstructive airway disease. It is also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm.
Follow all directions to use Proventil HFA exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
The usual dose of Proventil is two inhalations every 4 to 6 hours. To prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm, use two inhalations 15 to 30 minutes before you exercise. The effects of Proventil should last about 4 to 6 hours.
When using the Proventil HFA inhaler device for the first time, prime it by spraying 4 test sprays into the air away from your face. Shake well before priming. Also, prime the inhaler if you have not used it for two weeks or longer or if you have dropped the inhaler.
To use the Proventil HFA inhaler:
Shake the canister well just before each spray. Uncap the mouthpiece of the Proventil HFA inhaler. Breathe out fully. Put the mouthpiece into your mouth and close your lips. Breathe in slowly while pushing down on the canister. Hold your breath for 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly.
If you use more than one inhalation at a time, wait at least 1 minute before using the second inhalation and shake the inhaler again.
Before using Proventil HFA, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: heart problems (such as irregular heartbeat, angina, heart attack), high blood pressure, and seizure. Or if you are allergic to it, if you have had a serious reaction to similar drugs or if you have any other allergies.
Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you dizzier. This drug may make you dizzy. Limit alcoholic beverages. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely.
Common Proventil HFA side effects may include:
It is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Proventil: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
What is Proventil HFA?
Proventil HFA is used to prevent and treat wheezing and shortness of breath caused by breathing problems. It is also used to prevent asthma brought on by exercise. It is a quick-relief drug. It works by relaxing the muscles around the airways so that they open up and you can breathe more easily.
Can I take Proventil HFA while I’m Pregnant?
If you are pregnant, you should talk to your healthcare provider about which asthma medication is right for you. However, Proventil HFA is safe to use at regular doses if you have difficulty breathing during pregnancy. It can help with sudden spells of shortness of breath but doesn’t help control breathing symptoms over time.
How to store Proventil HFA?
Keep the Proventil HFA in the foil pouch until you are ready to use it—store it at room temperature, away from heat and direct light. Use it immediately once the vial is open. Store the Proventil HFA inhaler with the mouthpiece down. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children.
What are Proventil HFA side effects?
Nervousness, shaking (tremor), headache, mouth/throat dryness or irritation, changes in taste, cough, nausea, or dizziness may occur.
