• Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Remember to use it at the same time each day. It may take up to 3 months to notice a benefit.
• You must continue to take this medication to maintain your hair growth. When you stop taking finasteride, any gain in hair quantity is generally lost within 12 months.

Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Before taking Propecia, know that:

• Propecia should never be taken by a woman or a child. Finasteride can be absorbed through the skin, and women or children should not be permitted to handle finasteride tablets.
• Using Propecia may increase your risk of developing prostate cancer. Your doctor will perform tests to make sure you do not have other conditions that would prevent you from safely using finasteride.

Before taking Propecia, tell your doctor:

• if you have ever had: liver disease, or abnormal liver function tests; prostate cancer; a bladder muscle disorder; stricture of your urethra; urination problems; or an allergic reaction to a similar medicine called dutasteride (Avodart).

This medication can cause birth defects if a woman is exposed to it during pregnancy. Propecia tablets should not be handled by a woman who is pregnant or who may become pregnant. Propecia tablets are coated and will prevent contact with the active ingredient during normal handling, provided that the tablets are not broken or crushed. If a woman accidentally comes into contact with this medication from a broken or crushed tablet, wash the area with soap and water right away.

Common side effects include but are not limited to:

• Headache
• Impotence, loss of interest in sex, or trouble having an orgasm
• Abnormal ejaculation
• Swelling in your hands or feet
• Dizziness, weakness, or feeling like you might pass out
• Runny nose
• Skin rash
• Decreased sexual ability/desire may occur. In some men, this medication can decrease the amount of semen released during sex. This is harmless but has continued in some men even after stopping treatment. 

If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor right away if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur:

• Pain in the testicles, inability to urinate
• Lump in the breast, nipple discharge, breast enlargement/tenderness/pain

• A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms may include rash, itching./swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
