Desowen Ointment is a topical steroid used to treat inflammation and itching caused by several skin conditions, such as allergic reactions, eczema, and psoriasis.

Use Desowen Ointment only as directed by your doctor. This medicine is for use on the skin only. Do not get it into your eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina. Please do not use it on skin areas that have cuts, scrapes, or burns. If it does get on these areas, rinse it off right away with water.

Do not use the topical gel on the groin or underarms unless directed to your doctor, and do not use this form for more than four weeks.

To use the ointment:

• Wash your hands with soap and water before and after using this medicine.
• Apply a thin layer of this medicine to the affected skin area. Rub it in gently.
• Do not bandage or otherwise wrap the skin being treated unless directed to do so by your doctor.
• If the medicine is applied to the diaper area of an infant, do not use tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants unless directed to do so by your doctor.

Before taking Desowen Ointment:

• Talk with your doctor before you use other drugs or products on your skin.
• Do not use tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants if the treated part is in the diaper area. It may cause more drugs to get into the body.
• Do not put on cuts, scrapes, or damaged skin.
• Use care when putting on a large part of the skin or where there are open wounds.
• Do not use Desowen Ointment for longer than your doctor told you.
• This medicine may raise the chance of cataracts or glaucoma. 
• Use with care in children. Talk with the doctor.
• This medicine may affect growth in children and teens in some cases. They may need regular growth checks. 
• Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan on getting pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

Common side effects of  Desowen Ointment include burning, stinging, itching, irritation, dryness, peeling, or redness when this ointment is first applied to the skin. These side effects should disappear in a few days as your body adjusts to Desowen Ointment. Other side effects of this medication include:

• scaly skin,
• thinning or softening of your skin,
• skin rash or irritation around your mouth,
• swollen hair follicles,
• changes in the color of treated skin,
• blisters,
  pimples,
• crusting of treated skin, or
• stretch marks.

It is prescribed to treat skin rashes and skin irritation.

How should Desowen Ointment be used?

Apply a thin layer to the affected area(s) 2 to 3 times daily. Please do not use it for more than two weeks straight.
