Why is Aceon prescribed?

Aceon (Perindopril) is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. Perindopril is in a class of medications called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It makes blood flow more smoothly by preventing the production of certain natural chemicals that tighten the blood vessels. High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation. Perindopril (Generic) is available in addition to the brand name. 

What is the most effective way to take Aceon?

Take Aceon exactly as directed. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose.

• Take each dose with a full glass of water
• Drink plenty of liquids while you are taking Aceon
• You may take Aceon with or without food
• Your blood pressure will need to be checked often. Your kidney or liver function may also need to be checked.
• Call your doctor if you have ongoing vomiting or diarrhea, or if you are sweating more than usual. You can easily become dehydrated while taking perindopril. This can lead to very low blood pressure, electrolyte disorders, or even kidney failure 
• If you are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using this medication even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. 

Before taking perindopril, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

• if you are allergic to it; or to other ACE inhibitors or if you have any other drug allergies
• your medical history, especially of: a history of allergic reactions which included swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat (angioedema), blood filtering procedures (such as dialysis), high level of potassium in the blood, or liver disease

Pregnancy Warning:

• This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy. It may harm an unborn baby. Consult your doctor for more details. See also Warning section.
• It is unknown if perindopril passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Perindopril side effects include but are not limited to:

• cough
• headache
• weakness
• dizziness
• diarrhea
• stomach pain
• upset stomach

Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away. Some side effects can be serious. If you experience any of these symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

• swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
• hoarseness
• difficulty swallowing or breathing
• lightheadedness
• fainting
• fever, sore throat, chills, and other signs of infection
• irregular or rapid heartbeats

Perindopril may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.

Why is Aceon prescribed?

Aceon is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and as a preventative measure against heart attacks in people with coronary artery disease.

Do I need to inform anyone that I am taking Aceon?

If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using perindopril.

What if I miss a dose of Aceon?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How and where should I store this medication?

Store Aceon at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
